SUBJECT: Mercer Bits & Pieces Newsletter

Calling all Mercer Eagles! Thanks to your generosity and surpassing our Move 4 Mercer goal, Mrs. Davidson, Mrs. Beard, and Mrs. Naughton are sleeping on the roof TONIGHT, Oct.20th!  Families are encouraged to stop by. There will be sidewalk chalk, dance parties and a water balloon launch (with prizes)!  Earn more tries at the balloon launch by bringing breakfast items for the IPM food drive. For every five donated food items, your child gets an additional water balloon to shoot. The grade with the most donations gets an extra recess!

MERCER HAPPENINGS

Move 4 Mercer Results

Congratulations, Mercer Eagles!  We were able to collect $29,885 for Move 4 Mercer! This is the most successful Move 4 Mercer in history! Thank you for the AMAZING work and generosity from our students, parents and teachers! 

Since we surpassed our goal, Mrs. Davidson, Mrs. Beard and Mrs. Naughton will be sleeping on the roof tonight! Students also earned one hour of tech time and a special recess.  We will share the date and details of the special recess soon. 

Congratulations to 1st grade! You led the school in donations by earning $4,992!

All In Collection Drive This Week!

Join us as we help Feed Families and Nourish Souls during the 2021 All In Collection Drive, October 18-23!  The All In Collection Drive is the largest annual collection drive for Inter Parish Ministry. Because of you, we support local families in need with food, clothing, and other communal support. 45,000 pounds of food are provided each month and 800 new families are served each year through Inter Parish Ministry.  Let’s do our part at the All In Collection Drive!

For the Collection Drive, Mercer is responsible for collecting BREAKFAST items such cereal boxes, pancake/waffle mixes, syrup, peanut butter, granola bars, jelly (plastic jars, please) and protein bars.  Students should bring items and place them in the bins in their grade level hallways. The grade level that brings in the most items will win an extra recess.

If anyone is interested in volunteering on Friday, October 22, from 5:00-7:00 pm or Saturday, October 23, from 10:00 am-12:00 pm, please contact Gigi Naughton at giginaughton@foresthills.edu.

Mercer Meal Night - CityBird

Ski Club

Fifth and sixth graders, get ready to hit the slopes at Perfect North with your classmates in January! Get more information and access permission forms at mercerpta.org/skiclub. Be sure to purchase your ski passes by November 7th to get the club discount.

Scholastic Book Fair

Mercer will be having an in-person Fall Book Fair November 8th-12th! Kindergarten through 6th Grade students will attend during their normal Media Day.

NO cash or checks will be accepted. The eWallet has worked very well at other schools in the district and was great in the Spring. 

To create an eWallet, please visit the Mercer Book Fair website to get started. Also, you can watch this quick video for more information. After the fair, remaining eWallet funds display as a gift card balance and can be used at the Scholastic Store Online or to fund an eWallet for a future book fair.  Check out the eWallet, and see the FAQ document if you have more questions.

Mercer Meal Night - Raising Cane's

Nurturing the Nest

Mercer's counselor, Gigi Naughton, and principal, Jodi Davidson, will host coffee chats called "Nurturing the Nest" as an informal parent support group to discuss and share parenting concerns, issues and solutions. NEWS TO NOTE

Box Tops for Education

If you have any paper Box Tops lingering at home (remember they are being replaced with digital collection), you can submit them directly to General Mills in time for the Nov. 1st fall submission deadline. Check out boxtops4education.com for instructions. The $0.10 per package earned by Mercer PTA will add up if we all contribute. Download the Box Tops app on your favorite app store today and scan every time you shop. 

Mercer Yearbook Update

The 2020-2021 (last year) yearbooks have now been distributed to students. If you paid and your student did not receive their yearbook, or if you did not previously place an order and would like a yearbook, please contact Diana Ellis (kbedde@mac.com).

The order site for the 2021-2022 yearbooks will not be open until November.  Communication will be sent via Bits & Pieces, and you will see signs in front of the building when the site is open for this year’s yearbook orders. 

PTA Membership

Teachers often to use their own money and resources to supplement materials and funds provided by the school district. These items make their classroom a more comfortable, colorful and exciting place for kids to learn and teachers to work.

Help Stock the Makerspace

The Mercer Makerspace is in need of recycled and craft materials: paper bags, toilet paper rolls, chip tubes, straws, pipe cleaners, foil, building materials, tape, old toys, etc. Contact Mr. Frye with questions. Thank you!

SIXTH GRADE SPOT

6th Grade Parents - it's time to get excited about events for our last year in elementary school!!! Here's what we need from you:

  1. Join the PTA - www.mercerpta.org
  2. Through the PTA website you will see a line item for 6th grade activity fees. This is set at $25 and will help us cover the majority of the activities.
  3. Volunteers: Activities are possible because of volunteers. We would like to form a list of helpers for the events. If you are willing to join our team, please send an email to meganpcarter@gmail.com.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Youth Wrestling Clinic Series

The Turpin Coaching Staff is holding the first annual Youth Wrestling Clinic series this winter from November 8th-February 24th. The camp is open to boys and girls from grades 1-6 and will take place on Mondays and Thursdays from 7:15-8:45 PM in the Turpin Auxiliary Gym. Cost is $125. Anderson Theatre opens a new season with The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee!

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a Tony-winning musical comedy that centers on six awkward spelling champions competing for top honors in a spelling bee run by three equally-quirky grown-ups. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny, and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a fun and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is easily one of the most enjoyable musicals that you will ever be a part of. Yes, that’s right—each night, a few audience members will have the chance to compete along side the performers…at least for a while! Will you be up to the test? This delightful and heart-felt musical will send you home with a grin, a song, and a juice box. Hilarious. H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S Hilarious!

Performances are November 19th and 20th at 7:00 PM and November 21st at 3:00 PM in AHS's Titus Auditorium. Tickets are $10 and on sale now.
